Layered House (層家)** Renovation & Extension of a Traditional Hanok in Sajik-dong, Jongno A new layer of life was added without erasing 95 years of history. Layered House is a traditional Korean hanok in Sajik-dong, Jongno, reconfigured to accommodate contemporary life while preserving the character and memory of the existing house. The original structure was carefully retained, while the entrance was reorganized to create a new relationship with the surrounding neighborhood. The existing hanok was stripped back to its structural frame and comprehensively renovated. A long-neglected and illegally occupied area was removed and replaced with a new reinforced-concrete extension. The addition accommodates a study, dressing room, and a small viewing space overlooking the city of Jongno. Rather than restoring the house to a particular moment in the past, the project respects the layers of time and adds a new layer of life. The old hanok and the new extension coexist as different layers of time, becoming one house.
