Three Colored Houses is a set of homes in Siu-ri, Joan-myeon, Namyangju, each finished in a different brick. When a single site is subdivided into lots, it is common — for feasibility — to apply the same plan and the same finish to each house. Here, however, houses in RED, BEIGE, and WHITE are naturally distinguished within a single site and arranged so as not to spoil one another's orientation and views. Facing the given nature as much as possible, and understanding the limits within which each house does not intrude on another's privacy, was the core concept of the Three Colored Houses project. The level differences between the subdivided lots ranged from 1 m to 5 m, so the foundation heights and placement of each house were adjusted so as not to obstruct the view seen from the house behind. Each single-storey light-frame timber house has an interior floor area of about 25 pyeong and a loft of about 10 pyeong; through the right connection and distribution of interior and exterior space, rooms are defined and the usability of inside and outside is maximised.
